While American Henry Ford propelled the automobile to stardom, many people still feel Europe is the true home of the car, and the continent certainly holds its own with prestigious motor shows. One of the oldest, the Frankfurt International Automobile Exhibition, is still going strong today - 65 years after it first opened its doors - and the quality of vehicles being showcased has only risen with time.
Taking place each September, this German expo doesn't only favour the country's own manufacturers, but features a wealth of vehicles, from Audi and Chevrolet to Skoda and Volkswagen. Paris is another top city for car lovers, proving that the French capital has more to offer than museums and romance. Equip Auto takes place at the Paris Nord, and is an ideal place to see the latest breakthroughs and forecasts that will shape the industry over the coming years. However, even this event pales in comparison to the 11-day Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland - more than 80 years old and still one of the world's defining motoring expositions.
Motor shows are about looking forwards to the future, not to the past, and younger equivalents such as the Moscow International Motor Show have quickly become rising stars of the global scene. First taking place in 1992, this Russian motor show attracts visitors from far and wide to the city's Crocus Expo Centre. That's not to say the UK is lagging behind when it comes to auto shows though, with the home-grown British International Motor Show being one of the highest rated in the world. Organised by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the event is open to the public and takes place at London's vast Excel Exhibition Centre, where it is thought to be returning in 2012 after its temporary cancellation in 2010.
As well as being a perfect place to gaze in awe at new and exclusive vehicles, the British International Motor Show can also be a great place to upgrade your own car, with everything from car accessories to motor insurance being showcased.Motor shows have long taken pride of place among the world's most popular exhibitions - a chance for industry workers and interested attendees alike to witness the latest developments and future predictions for the global motoring industry. The world's biggest motor shows regularly attract thousands of visitors at many points throughout the year, meaning there's never a dull month for automotive enthusiasts.
